Bursera Simaruba is a native to the tropical regions of north america, including Florida, through Mexico and into Brazil. It has many common names, including the Tourist Tree (as it has red peeling bark like sunburnt tourists!), Turpentine Tree Copperwood , and most commonly known as Gumbo Limbo.

It a medium size, dioecious tree, eventually growing to 20 - 30 meters with a shiny dark red and peeling bark, with 10 cm long ovate leaves. It is a popular tree for bees when in flower.

Established trees are drought tolerant, and prefers a sunny position with a well-drained soil.

It has a history or medicinal uses and is used in varnishes and as a substitute for gum arabic. The resin was also used as an insence by the Mayans.
